JERSEY BEARCATS SIGN FORMER UCONN WIDE RECEIVER NIGEL FITZGERALD FOR 2027 SEASON
Former NCAA Division I standout brings size, physicality, and big-play potential to the Bearcats’ receiving corps.
NEW JERSEY — October 19, 2026 — The Jersey Bearcats continue building their roster for the 2027 American Arena League season with the addition of former University of Connecticut and Old Dominion University wide receiver Nigel Fitzgerald, bringing another powerful offensive weapon to New Jersey.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Fitzgerald brings an imposing combination of size, athleticism, and Division I football experience to the Bearcats’ offense. His physical frame, ability to compete for contested catches, and potential as a red-zone target make him an exciting addition as the organization prepares for the upcoming season.
A Greensboro, North Carolina native, Fitzgerald began his collegiate career at Old Dominion University before transferring to the University of Connecticut, where he played for the Huskies under head coach Jim Mora.
During his 2019 season at Old Dominion, Fitzgerald appeared in all 12 games, making three starts and recording 14 receptions for 219 yards. His performance included a 45-yard reception against East Carolina and several explosive plays that demonstrated his ability to stretch the field.
Before entering the collegiate ranks, Fitzgerald was a three-star recruit out of Dudley High School in Greensboro, where he recorded 51 receptions for 973 yards and 15 touchdowns during his senior season. His success helped establish him as a promising receiving prospect and earned him recognition among college football programs.
At UConn, Fitzgerald continued developing his game against NCAA Division I competition. During the Huskies’ 2022 spring practices, his physical presence and ability to make difficult, contested catches attracted attention, including an impressive leaping reception on a fade route.
A POTENTIAL GAME-CHANGER FOR THE BEARCATS
Fitzgerald’s arrival presents an intriguing opportunity for the Jersey Bearcats’ offense.
In arena football, where the field is condensed, throwing windows are tighter, and scoring opportunities develop quickly, receivers with Fitzgerald’s size can create significant advantages.
His height and physical frame give the Bearcats an opportunity to establish a commanding presence along the boards, challenge defensive backs in one-on-one situations, and create additional passing options near the goal line.
Whether attacking the middle of the field, competing for jump balls, or creating mismatches against smaller defensive backs, Fitzgerald possesses the physical tools to become a valuable weapon in the Bearcats’ passing attack.
Beyond his athletic ability, his experience at two Division I programs brings an additional level of competitive preparation and maturity to a team focused on raising expectations for the 2027 season.
As the Jersey Bearcats prepare for their next chapter in the American Arena League, the addition of Nigel Fitzgerald reflects the organization’s commitment to building a competitive, physical, and explosive roster capable of making an impact throughout the league.
